Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, non-drug treatment for depression, available across Illinois since shortly after its 2008 clearance. It uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the region of the brain that regulates mood and that is measurably underactive in many people with treatment-resistant depression. A standard course runs five days a week for six weeks, each session lasting between three and thirty-seven minutes depending on the protocol.
